SUPERWOMAN
I hope and pray that my unborn daughter reads this one day
Because I want her to be a superwoman defined by her own terms
Not by societal stereotypes or norms
I hope that she grows to be a lady of virtue, of substance and honour
To love and cherish life with all its trappings in equal measure
I hope she grows to love what is just and right
And to loathe hate with all her entirety
For it is a burden to a good soul
I will teach her to learn that she needs no flowers to know that she is appreciated
Because she is a real flower, a rose to blossom
That she does not have to go on fancy dates and candle-lit dinners to know her worth
That she is a princess and her value can not be measured in diamonds or gold
I will show her the meaning of true love by treating her mama right
My superwoman
I will teach her to adore the truth no matter the cost
I will point her towards the paths of my mother, her mother, their mothers and all women in our lives who make us
Superwomen who defied the storm
Rode against the current
And defied gravity
I want her to know that life is not always a fairy tale and will not always end in a happy ending
That she can be Cinderella, start out with mice in the cellar and end up in the ball with a glass slipper
Yes, she can be a superwoman
And that she does not need to lighten her ebony skin to shine
Because she is already a star
That she requires no mutilation to make her a woman
Since she already is a superwoman
I will show her every day that in this cruel world, kindness can be found
That in life, sometimes we lose and sometimes we win
My superwoman.
