A LETTER TO SANKARA Pt.1

I hope it is well with you wherever you ended up
I hope it is with the ancestors, our other African forefathers
Nelson Mandela, the forever father of the rainbow nation
Patrice Lumumba the political martyr of the Zaire
Leopold Senghor who taught us all the essence of black consciousness
Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and the Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah himself 
Give my sincere greetings to other African saints
The ones our tears will forever flow for
The ones that Africa shall never forget!

Forgive me, forgive us 
Forgive Africa for being a disappointment to the ideals you fought for
For constantly and consistently being a disgrace to black consciousness 
The beautiful future you fought for is now more blurry and so uncertain
The continent is in a bigger mess than the one you left it in
Corruption is more rampant, neocolonialism is at its peak
China just joined the fray and is fully utilizing the black gold that is Africa
Now our descendants are already indebted  
You tried to help
How easily we forget!

I will go to the village pool There where the echo is loudest And on that hallowed serenity I will scream Call out your names in rising decibels I will remind them of who you were Through song and dance The village maidens might as well ululate And in their painful wails all may decipher They will trample on the red earth with their bare feet And the copper rings on their legs will ring Their tears like a river will flow  The village elders with their backs arched with age Will join in the fray even if hesitantly Fighting away the tears of a man The ones that they held back since you left Sobbing together in unison Our tears flowing into the still waters Mixing our pain and our source of livelihood To form a lasting memory I will not let them forget your name.
